The opportunity came to us through the East Bay Bike Coalition, an organization working for safe, convenient, and enjoyable bicycling for all people in the East Bay. SPOKES was looking for a way to move from Richmond and establish themselves in Oakland by building their community and their brand and kicking off the search for a permanent home. And with Bike to Work Day happening in the month of May in downtown Oakland, it seemed like the perfect time to bring a bike-friendly community hub to the neighborhood.
Bike To Work Day happened on May 9th, and just as expected, over 20,000 commuters took to the streets on two wheels. Thousands of them gathered in downtown Oakland that afternoon for the after-party to enjoy food trucks, bands, DJs, and all sorts of fun activities. The SPOKES community lounge was a major part of that event as a gathering place for bike enthusiasts interested in bike repair, shopping, or just meeting like-minded folks.
The pop-up was a success, and we hope the incubation proved an excellent opportunity for SPOKES. We received positive feedback from Oaklanders about the importance of having bike-friendly community organizations like SPOKES in Oakland. We'll be working with the East Bay Bike Coalition on other upcoming projects, so keep an eye on this blog for updates.
