AvalonBay Communities, 651 Addison street, Berkeley, CA
The Black Squirrel is an independent, woman-owned yarn and fabric retail shop located in Berkeley, California. Owner Chase Clark opened the only yarn and craft shop in Berkeley, with a fine selection of curated, yarns from local dyers, fabrics, craft supplies, and gifts that support other woman-owned businesses, US-based manufacturing, that meet their standards of sustainability, softness, and quality. To serve the crafting community, they offer classes, workshops, and trunk shows in a dedicated maker space with a gallery. Their mission is to encourage customers at all skill levels, ages, genders, and incomes.
Popuphood and forward thinking real estate developer AvalonBay Communities Inc., in Berkeley transformed the ground floor retail of their Avalon Berkeley property located at 651 Addison Street in South 4th Street. Working with Verdon Architects, the team took a radical approach to build-out the space exclusively for a pop-up program, placing their focus on building a space that would support the greatest number and variety of retailers.
The Black Squirrel's owner Chase Clark was selected by Popuphood to participate in Berkeley's first Pop-up program to activate a vacant space, engage a broader bay area community with crafting classes and workshops, and demonstrate leadership to drive awareness of a regional Bay Area fibershead. The World Bank estimates that nearly 20% of industrial water pollution worldwide comes from textile treatment and dyeing. The Black Squirrel uses the accessibility of retail to connect both the customers and the curious to a broader social mission. Her welcoming space and classes invite the craft community to understand the local farm and food systems that can be harnessed sustainably to produce and dye the materials used to make, gift, exhibit, and wear their creations. Through her selection of vendors and connections at local farmers markets, she can both influence the 'Farm to Yarn' fibershed through her purchasing power and enlighten the community through skills-based activities to connect them to their local resources, heritage, and legacies.
We are excited that The Black Squirrel is a finalist for both Best Arts & Crafts Store and Best New Business for Oakland magazine Best of the East Bay Awards!
