We are a for profit social enterprise. As consultants we curate, market, design and engage to define creative place-making and economic development strategies for municipalities, developers, property owners, creatives, and retailers.
ABOUT Started in 2011, by creative entrepreneurs Sarah Filley and Alfonso Dominguez, popuphood is a small business incubator revitalizing neighborhoods block by block. We consult independent retailers and property owners to fill previously vacant storefronts and establish creative engagement to foster long term leases and growth for the neighborhood. It has been highly successful as a pilot, publicized widely, spoken about at international conferences, and most recently, featured in the US pavilion at the Venice Biennale. MISSION Popuphood is defining a local approach to rethinking retail and its role as a strategic tool for revitalization. By aligning our goals of neighborhood renewal with strategic partnerships in workforce and business development we leverage the larger business, government and tech sectors to connect micro-businesses to a shared economy of mutual success in a down economy. Popuphood provides a platform for developers and building owners to look at the triple bottom line and to assess their role as partners in the economic health of the broader community. Acting as a bridge for government agencies to invest in people we focus on the genius of hyper-local creative and community capital for solutions with global reach. CASE STUDY The success of popuphood in Old Oakland, California demonstrates that today’s micro-entrepreneurs are having a macro economic impact. Through these partnerships we have expanded our capacity to provide up to 6 months free rent to each of the retailers as well as tools, services, products, resources to support these interim businesses to sign a long term lease. Alfonso Dominguez has used his architectural background to create a signature international style for restaurants, hotels, and private residencies throughout the bay Area. A serial entrepreneur he launched El Taco Bike recently and is co-owner of Tamarindo, and Era Art Bar & Lounge. He is as passionate about innovative solutions as he is generous with good food and great design. |
