Umami Mart, after two years selling Japanese kitchen and barware online celebrates their highly anticipated space at 815 Broadway in Old Oakland. Join us for the Grand Opening on the First Friday, August 3, as a part of Oakland’s Art Murmur festivities. Specializing in kitchen and bar products from Japan, Umami Mart will expand its product line for the new shop to include more cocktail gear, as well as coffee and tea accessories.
The new space will not only be a retail shop, but a place to celebrate Japanese food and drinks through events, art exhibitions and demonstrations. Designed by art director Anders Arhøj from Copenhagen, Denmark, the space will evoke a mixture of Scandinavian modernism and Shinto classicism. In 2007, Umami Mart sprouted into this world as a food blog, with contributors from NYC, Tokyo, LA, San Francisco, São Paulo, London and Copenhagen. Over the years, it has slowly grown into a Japanese bar and kitchenware importing business. The Oakland shop will be a curation of kitchen tools from Japan by owners Yoko Kumano and Kayoko Akabori. The shop is designed by Anders Arhøj http://www.arhoj.com/
