The central tactic of co-locating these businesses and creating a geographically based aggregate of invested business owners was the key to this initiatives success. It is much easier to create a shopping destination if you can park and stroll, grab lunch, and check out five or more shops. BUilding on this is a new willingness for businesses to choose downtown Oakland as a location for a flagship store this last year. This expands opportunities for the resident and visitor to take advantage of a broader cluster, one that spans the downtown corridor along Broadway and Telegraph Avenue. While exciting this success is still tenuous, Oakland simply does not have the population and foot traffic of Brooklyn or San Francisco to support and grow these businesses. We can do two things about that.
1. Align small business economic development with the marketing of Oakland as a place to visit, invest, and live. Let's define and accelerate partnerships between The City of Oakland, the Community Benefits Districts, non-profit, health, arts sectors, and the good people of this town to strengthen small business and our international reputation.
2. This Holiday Season is the most important time of the year for any retailer, so if you like what is happening you can grow this budding vibrancy even during the chill of this economy, by shopping local.
Our friends at Oaklandish posted it best: "...Put your money where your heart is and support some homegrown Oakland businesses. We’ve made it easy for you – we plotted out a map of many of the independent downtown neighborhood businesses that will be open the day after Thanksgiving. Pick up a copy on the free B line shuttles, any participating downtown business, or tear out in the insert in this week’s East Bay Express Holiday Guide. Then, get it stamped at every spot you visit on 11/23 (you don’t even have to buy anything) and you’ll be entitled to free/cheap drinks and snacks in the neighborhood!
Plus, courtesy of the City of Oakland, street parking is free all day Plaid Friday and Saturdays the rest of the year starting this week. Also, the free B Shuttle will be running its regular Friday schedule." (from the Oaklandish website)
